FGM draws attention of seminar participants

By Daniel Luka Daniel

About 200 people last week attended a seminar on mother and child rights organized and run by a non governmental organization – Help to Self Help Project – in Arumeru district.

The seminar facilitator, Ms Martina Siara from the NGO said the objective of the seminar was to sensitize the people on  Mother and Child rights and protection.

Siara said they were also concerned with the mistreatment of women particularly. She took issue with the outdated female genital mutilation (FGM) among the communities that still subscribed to the practice.

A doctor from the Regional Hospital of Mt. Meru, Dr. Abella Kasori said, the girls had the inherent right to be heard particularly on crucial issues such as FGM and education that were in many cases interrupted through practices such as forced marriages.

Dr. Kasori  also made presentations on  HIV/AIDS and  premature forced marriages.

The seminar participants included religious, government and political leaders, NGO workers as well as professionals from different fields operating in Arumeru district.

The seminar was conducted at the Tanzania Assembles of God (TAG) hall Galilaya in Ngaramtoni township.
